Eddie Merrins has been playing golf
since he was an 11-year old in Meridian, Mississippi. He won the Mississippi
state amateur title at 17 and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Louisiana
State University after winning the 1950 Jaycee National Junior tournament. He
also won the prestigious Western Amateur Championship in 1955 before turning
professional in 1957.
While Eddie Merrins has won several
regional PGA and Open titles, he has devoted the large part of his professional
career to teaching. In 1975, Eddie also took over the golf program at
UCLA, turning it into one of the most successful collegiate programs in the
country during his tenure.
In 1973 Eddie authored the popular
instructional book, "Swing the Handle, Not the Clubhead." This book
was the basis for his most current endeavour - the "Swing the Handle"
Video Series. You can get your own copy of the book in our store.

Other
Notes:
Eddie
Merrins has recorded 16 career Holes-In-One, including two in the same round on
the same nine holes while he was 18 years old. This occurred at the Northwood
Country Club in Meridian, MS and was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
One of
Eddie Merrins most memorable aces occurred on the 107 yard 7th hole
at the Pebble Beach Golf Links during the 1964 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am.
This feat occurred with a 3 iron into a gale force wind.
In 1980,
Eddie Merrins founded Friends of College Golf, Inc., a non-profit organization
designed to raise money for struggling college golf programs. Upon his
retirement from coaching in 1989 the name was changed to Friends of Golf,
Inc. (FOG). At this time the focus not only included colleges but also now
incorporated numerous high school golf programs, caddie programs and the Evans
Scholar Foundation. To date the FOG organization has donated almost 5 million
dollars to these worthy causes and more. FOG is responsible for the creation of
the Ben Hogan Trophy, which annually goes to the top amateur player in the
country who is a collegiate golfer. This trophy was the dream of former
Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon and became a reality with the blessing of Ben
Hogan. Eddie Merrins and FOG are also responsible for the creation of two
other highly regarded collegiate awards, the Byron Nelson Trophy and the Dinah
Shore Trophy. These trophies are awarded annually to the male and female
golfer of the year who has excelled in both academics and on the golf course.
Tom, Ben, Byron and Dinah, four wonderful people whom we miss dearly and who
will forever be Friends of Golf.
